had gone about 10 minutes without scoring when, with about three minutes
left, Yardley pulled a classic maneuver for the historic bucket. "I
cherry-picked on them," he told the Times. "and it was
a dunk, which was doubly pleasing because they were really making a big
effort not to let me make it."
Yardley finished the game and the season with 2,001 points, and his 27.8 points per game led the league by far. One year later, Bob Pettit broke Yardley's mark by 104 points. Rookie Wilt Chamberlain put the record out of sight the following season when he piled up 2,707. |
Ironically, the Pistons traded Yardley to Syracuse midway through the 1958-59 season. He averaged 19.8 points that year and then 20.2 in 1959-60 before bringing his career to an abrupt end. In seven illustrious seasons Yardley accumulated 9,063 points for an average of 19.2 per game. |
